Congratulations, mama! The countdown to meeting your little one has begun, and this exciting chapter is filled with joy, anticipation, and, let’s be real—a bit of preparation.
As a maternity, newborn, and family photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing the first precious moments of so many families. Through countless conversations with parents, one thing is clear—having your hospital bag packed and ready brings a sense of ease as your due date approaches.
To make things simpler, I’ve created a free downloadable Maternity Bag Checklist, but here’s a quick rundown of the must-haves to get you started. Of course, every birth experience is unique, so feel free to tailor this list to suit your needs.
For Mam
Your comfort is key—before, during, and after labor. Here are some essentials to consider:
- Clothing: Pack a loose, comfy nightgown or labor-friendly outfit that allows easy movement. A cozy robe and nursing-friendly tops will be handy for post-delivery.
- Toiletries: Travel-size shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and a toothbrush will help you feel refreshed. Also, don’t forget lip balm and moisturiser—hospital air can be drying!
- Comfort Items: Bring anything that makes you feel at ease, like your favorite pillow, a soft blanket, or a playlist of calming music.
For Baby
Your little one won’t need much in those first few days, as hospitals typically provide the basics. But here are a few essentials to pack:
- Clothing: A couple of newborn outfits, including a special “going home” outfit. If it’s chilly, don’t forget a hat and mittens.
- Blankets: A soft swaddle or two will keep your baby snug and cozy.
- Car Seat: This one is a must! Make sure your car seat is installed properly ahead of time—you’ll need it to take your baby home.
For The Birth Partner
Your support person plays a crucial role, so they should be prepared, too. Here’s what they might want to bring:
- Snacks & Water: Labor can be long, and having some easy-to-eat snacks will help keep their energy up.
- Comfy Clothing: Layers are a great idea since hospital temperatures can vary.
- Entertainment: A book, tablet, or headphones can help pass the time during quieter moments.
